OAU to establish undergraduate agricultural programmes

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife is working with the Institute of Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T), Ibadan to establish undergraduate agricultural programmes.

The programmes will be established at the IAR&T, where students would be admitted for full time courses.

The OAU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede made this known at the opening ceremony of the IAR&T’s 50th anniversary held at the institute in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Ogunbodede said that this would create more effective extension of the Faculty of Agriculture and assist in reducing the number of applicants not admitted to Nigerian universities on the increase for many years.

“IAR&T has won OAU global recognition as a center of excellence for soil analysis, the university was awarded the Farming Enterprising Project sponsored by CBN and African Development Bank in the spirit of Public-Private-Partnership.

“The institute’s scientists have also been co-teaching our students, strengthening the workforce of most of our departments in the Faculty of Agriculture,” he said.

The IAR&T Executive Director, Prof. James Adediran said the institute was a multi-commodity national research institute that served as a national center for research on improvement of genetic potentials of crops, livestock.

Adediran noted that IAR&T partnered rural farmers, industries, and the public to deliver improved, cost effective agricultural technologies in spite of the effect of dwindling funding situation in Nigeria as well as climate change.

“They include production of soil, nutrient maps for soil management techniques, development of fortified organic enriched composts within reduced period of preparation, provision of improved feeds, housing for macro, micro livestock production.

“Development, release of 70 high yielding, adaptable new varieties of maize, cowpea, soybean, kenaf as well as improved animal reproduction through artificial insemination technique, among others,” he said.
